Our History

1980

Founded

The Cobbler was founded by Tom Dwyer and his wife Sinead in 1980. Tom had worked for 12 years in Lee Footwear Cork where he trained in all facets of shoe making, since his main role during those years was in product development. That role meant that he had an in depth knowledge of every department from leather buying to designing to the finishing of the many types of shoe produced in the factory.

1990

Second Shop

Tom and Sinead took the decision to open a second shop in Douglas Court Shopping Centre in 1990 ten years after the opening of their flagship store in Oliver Plunkett St. Such was the demand for the service at that time, that The Cobbler had four full time staff doing nothing but repairs.

1993

Big refurbishment

While the city shop was being refurbished for three weeks, during this time they had a container outside the shop where they repaired shoes for the loyal customers of cork

2000

Diversification

Over the years, the volume of shoe repairing has reduced quite significantly which has meant that the Cobbler has had to diversify into other services such as key cutting, engraving, watch repairs as well as selling a complete range of shoe care products, leather bags, belts, purses and gents wallets.

2005

Second Shop

2005 This year was a major disaster for our shop in Oliver Plunkett Street. We had a fire in the shop which caused extensive damage which resulted in us having to close down for four months. The shop was refurbished from bottom to top and this included us having to purchase a complete bank of new machinery.

Luckily, we were able to look after our customers needs in our branch in Douglas Court.

When we re-opened, our loyal customers flocked back to us as before.

We were so grateful to them for their patience and continued support.
Present

Our new shop is larger and brighter than before. This has enabled us to expand our range of rucksacks and also stock a range of luggage an travel accessories. Just follow the footsteps which lead from our old shop and you will find us.
